Miami Open: Filipina mit Wildcard schlägt die Nr. 2 der Weltrangliste

Die mit einer Wildcard beim Turnier gestartete 19-jährige Alexandra Eala schlug gestern bei der Miami Open im Tennis überraschend die zweite der Weltrangliste Iga Swiatek mit 6 : 2 und 7 : 5. Damit kommt die Filipina in das Halbfinale.

"I'm just in disbelief right now. It's so surreal," she said on court.

Eala moved to Spain at the age of 13 to join Rafael Nadal's academy in Mallorca and Toni Nadal, the Spaniard's uncle and former coach, was in her box for the match.

Eala, a 19-year-old native of the Philippines, was the 2022 US Open junior winner and previously won a pair of doubles titles at junior Grand Slam events. Mboko, 18, is a Canadian who has already claimed seven professional titles after reaching as high as No. 6 as a junior. Grant, an American who turns 17 next week, has been ranked as high as the No. 2 junior in the world and has won three junior doubles titles at Grand Slam events. Lastly, Ishii, a Japanese 19-year-old, previously held at No. 5 in the junior rankings.

Eala bowed out of the WTA 1000 tournament after absorbing a 6(3)-7, 7-5, 3-6 loss against World No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the tournament's semifinals at the Hard Rock Stadium on March 27, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Florida Friday (Manila time).
